The dhurrie is a flat-woven cotton or wool floor covering native to the Indian subcontinent, with a documented history that reaches back into Mughal-era textile production. It predates the knotted rug on this soil by centuries, and it survives because it is honest. No pile to crush, no foundation to stretch, just yarn locked together by tension on a horizontal loom. This multi-tone dhurrie reading carries the form forward without stylising it, with the geometry built into the weave structure rather than overlaid on it.
One weaver worked this rug for roughly 4 weeks on a horizontal loom in India. The yarn was hand-loaded into the warp, and the weft was beaten down with a wooden comb after every pass, which is the slow step that gives a flat weave its tight feel and its long structural life. The result is a reversible rug at roughly the same weight as a heavy textile, foldable, packable, easily relocated when the room changes or the season turns.
The composition
The multi-tone field carries the dhurrie drawing in clean hand-loaded blocks of colour. There is no pile to soften the edges, so the geometry reads sharp at any distance. The yarn carries the slight tonal variation of small-batch dyeing, which is what separates a hand-woven flat piece from a printed equivalent. Read the rug from across the room and the composition holds; walk closer and the hand of the weaver becomes visible in every row.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) suits a casual living arrangement, a child's room, an indoor-outdoor terrace under cover, or layered as the bottom rug under a smaller pile piece. The multi-tone palette sits well with timber, cane, linen, and rattan, and grounds a room that already has a strong painting or piece of furniture pulling the eye. Light enough to lift, fold, and re-site as the room changes.
Care
Vacuum on suction with the beater bar off. Shake out the loose dust every few weeks for the first months and the rug will settle to a clean rotation. Blot spills immediately with a damp cotton cloth. Spot clean with mild detergent and cold water. Dry flat away from direct sun to keep the colour true. Professional clean every two to three years to lift embedded dust from deep in the weave.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
