By the late nineteenth century, the workshops at Tabriz had quietly redefined what a hand-knotted rug could be. Weavers who had inherited their loom-craft from generations before them began softening dense classical repeats into open, breathable fields that suited the new collector. The pattern in front of you sits inside that lineage. The drawing has been re-cut for contemporary rooms but the bones, the proportion, the way the field carries the secondary motifs, are recognisably from that source.

A single weaver worked this piece for six to ten weeks in India. The pile is hand-spun wool. The foundation is cotton. Every knot tied by feel against the warp, then beaten down with a steel comb before the next row went in. The making is slow because the result is meant to last several lifetimes.

The composition

Ivory and gold sits across an open ground, the secondary motifs scaled small enough that the field stays the principal subject. The border is restrained. The colour is layered, two or three values close together rather than a single flat tone, so the surface holds depth at every viewing distance. The wool catches the light differently from the morning to the evening, and the rug looks slightly different at every passing.

What you are buying

This is an entry into collecting hand-knotted wool work at a price that would not normally buy you a piece of this density. The rug was made in India to the same construction as the antique pieces in the lineage. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and it outlives the furniture that sits on it.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' (91 × 152 cm) is the accent scale: under a coffee table, in a foyer, at the foot of a bed. Use it where the floor needs a single considered note rather than a full carpeted ground. The ivory and gold palette sits well against mid-tone walls and warm wood floors. Mid-saturation upholstery in linen, cotton, or undyed wool reads cleanly against the field; deeper tones in leather and walnut anchor the room from above.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn every six months so light and traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; suction only, never the rotating brush. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. With this care, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
