The combination of brown and red is one of the older marriages in textile dyeing because the two colours come from neighbouring corners of the natural-dye palette, walnut hull and madder root, and they share a base warmth that lets them sit together without competing. The Overdyed Brown Red rug in front of you takes that combination through a contemporary immersion finish.
The base rug was hand-knotted in India over four months by two to three weavers working a classical Persian floral cartoon. After weaving, the rug was washed, sheared down to a low pile, and lowered into a brown-red immersion bath. The original Persian palette shows through as ghosts of pattern under the new dominant tone, which is the effect the overdye protocol is designed to deliver.
The composition
A warm brown-red field reads first, with the original Persian floral surfacing in close burgundy and walnut variations underneath. The pile sits low and the colour has the slightly uneven density that distinguishes immersion-dyed work from yarn-stage chemistry. As the wool ages, the warm tones will deepen further and the under-drawing will read more clearly.
What you are buying
Properly overdyed Persian-base pieces in this scale trade at Western dealer prices of three to six thousand US dollars routinely. This is a contemporary hand-knotted base, with the same wash and immersion finishing protocol, supplied substantially below dealer levels. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the structural reason a serious overdye is worth the difference over a printed alternative.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) holds a primary seating arrangement or a six-seat dining set. The brown-red palette reads warmly against cream limewash and putty walls, against oak and walnut floors, and against brass, leather, and pale linen upholstery. The rug works as a warm ground rather than a focal object.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate end-to-end at the change of seasons. Blot spills with absorbent cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should wash the rug every five to seven years. The piece expects an eighty-year service life on this regimen.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
