Agra weaving owes its delicacy to a Mughal court tradition that prized elongated floral tendrils and starred medallions over the heavy palmette work of western Persia. Court ateliers refined the drawing across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the lineage continued long after the workshops moved into private hands. The vocabulary on this round rug, angular vines and quietly geometric stars set against a dark ground, sits firmly within that history.

Two weavers worked the circular loom for roughly four months. The pile is hand-spun wool dyed in small lots so the black ground holds the slight grain that distinguishes a real Agra from a printed copy. The beige drawing was cut from undyed fleece to keep its natural lanolin warmth. Each row was packed by hand with a steel comb before the next was tied, the foundation strong enough to take the curvature without distorting the field.

The composition

A black ground with beige floral tracery and small star forms scattered along radiating lines. The geometry is centred, as a circular weave demands, but the drawing reads as movement rather than as a fixed roundel. The black settles slightly with use into a near-charcoal, and the beige ages toward a warmer ivory. The colour relationship sharpens rather than softens over the first decade.

What you are buying

Round Agras of this scale rarely surface in the auction trade because they were custom commissions, and antique survivors at this size in good condition trade in the thirty to seventy thousand dollar band when they appear. This is a current weaving in the same tradition, on the same hand-built loom, in the same fibre. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the only floor object that holds that property.

The piece in a room

An 8' round (244 cm) rug asks for a circular dining setup, a rotunda entry, or the centre of a square room where a rectangle would feel mis-scaled. The black field reads as a controlled void under brass pendants and dark walnut. Pale walls let the floral drawing carry; deep walls turn the rug into the floor itself. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to govern its own field.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn each season so foot traffic and daylight age the piece evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care, an Agra of this construction runs a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
