The Agra workshops drew their reputation from a single quality the European market admired above all others, the fineness of the floral tracery against an open ground. By the late nineteenth century the design had been adapted for the drawing rooms of London and Paris, with palettes that softened the palace blacks toward beige, ivory, and burgundy. The rug in front of you sits in that civil tradition.

Three weavers shared the loom for close to seven months. The Persian asymmetric knot was tied row by row against a vertical beam, every knot packed with a steel beating comb before the next was begun. The pile is hand-spun wool, the foundation cotton, and the dye lots were prepared in small batches so the burgundy reads as a layered red rather than as a single flat note. The drawing was scaled directly from a master cartoon held by the workshop.

The composition

A beige field carries the floral tendrils that give Agras their reputation, with burgundy reserved for the central medallion and the inner border guard. The colour balance is unusual, the warm beige holds about seventy percent of the surface, leaving the burgundy to act as a stop rather than as a ground. Over time the beige ages toward bone and the burgundy darkens into oxblood, the contrast tightening with use.

What you are buying

An antique Agra of this drawing fineness with comparable condition trades through the London and New York auction rooms in the twenty to forty thousand dollar range. This is a current weaving on a hand-built loom, in hand-spun wool, with the same knot density a period piece would carry. The rug appreciates rather than depreciating with use, which is the case for almost no other object you place on a floor.

The piece in a room

9' × 12' (274 × 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The beige ground reads against pale plaster walls without losing the burgundy, and the rug sits comfortably under a ten-seat dining table or a full sectional. Brass and walnut belong with this palette. Cool greys fight the warm beige; warm greys settle into it.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so the field ages evenly under daylight. Weekly vacuum, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with cotton, never rub. Schedule a wool-trained conservator to hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. Stored properly, an Agra of this build lasts the better part of a century.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
