New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes natural red dye to the saturation a Gabbeh demands without losing the slight irregularity that gives the wool its life. The fleece is finer than the Indian or Iranian equivalents, longer in staple, and consistently low in colour-deadening grease. The rug here uses that fibre advantage to push a single red ground into the depth that the Qashqai weavers used to achieve only with madder root over multiple seasons of dye work.

Two weavers worked the handloom for roughly four and a half months. The wool was hand-spun before tying so the knot held the slight thick-thin variation that makes the surface read as fabric rather than as machine-uniform pile. Dye work was done in small open vats with a madder-derived natural dye supplemented by a stable synthetic adjunct, the standard practice in the Indian workshops that supply the Western dealer trade. The pile was sheared in two passes to a final fifteen millimetres.

The composition

A single dominant red field with sparse tribal incident, a few small geometric figures, and a quiet darker border. The composition is built to let the red carry the room, with the figures functioning as accent rather than as drawing. Over the first decade the red darkens toward a deeper carmine and the small accents lift in relief as the surrounding pile compacts slightly with use.

What you are buying

Single-field Gabbehs of this saturation, in New Zealand wool, on a hand-built loom, hand-spun, are produced in numbers small enough that the specialist dealers in London and Frankfurt routinely move them through at fifteen to twenty-five thousand dollars. This is a current weaving in the same construction. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the only object you put on a floor that holds that property.

The piece in a room

5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) suits a primary bedroom, a study, or a reading corner. The red is the architecture once the rug is laid, and the rest of the room arranges itself around it. Pair with off-white walls, warm wood furniture, and brass or oxidised copper fixtures. Cool grey walls fight the red; warm plaster tones absorb it.

Conservation

Rotate the rug every six months so daylight reaches the field evenly. Weekly vacuum, suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years for a long working life.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
