Beige in a Gabbeh is rarely a single colour. It is undyed wool sorted and re-blended from multiple fleeces to produce a tonal field that holds the slight variation of a real animal hide. The southern weavers worked this way because dyestuff was scarce; the Indian workshops that have continued the tradition work this way because the result is more honest than any dyed equivalent. The rug here is a contemporary reading of that practice.
Two weavers shared the loom for roughly four and a half months. The undyed New Zealand wool was hand-spun before tying so the natural variation in the fleece carried into the surface of the finished pile. The Persian asymmetric knot was packed row by row against the vertical beam. Small accents of darker undyed wool were used for the tribal incident; no dye was used in the construction of this rug, which is unusual and which gives the piece an honesty that dyed work cannot match.
The composition
An open beige field, with sparse darker incident in the form of small geometric figures. The piece reads as a calm tonal ground from a distance and as a drawing in close inspection. The wool ages toward a warm bone, and the darker accents stay sharp because the contrast was built into the fibre itself rather than into a dye relationship that softens with use. The surface develops patina in a way that engineered fibre cannot.
What you are buying
Undyed Gabbehs in New Zealand wool of this scale and condition trade through the specialist European dealers at twelve to twenty thousand dollars when they appear. This is a current weaving in the same tradition. The rug appreciates with use; the patina that develops in undyed natural wool is precisely the property collectors of antique tribal carpets pay for.
The piece in a room
5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) sits well in a primary bedroom or under a small study desk. The beige works against almost any wall colour because it carries no chromatic position; it is the wool itself rather than a stated palette. Walnut, oak, brushed brass, and aged leather all sit naturally with the rug.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Weekly vacuum with the beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton from the outside in. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years. Undyed pieces age longer than dyed equivalents because there is no dye relationship to fail.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
