Garden carpets are among the oldest figurative compositions in the Persian tradition, drawings of paradise gardens laid out in formal quadrants, with watercourses, planted beds, and cypress trees arranged the way a Mughal architect would lay out a charbagh. The Persian Garden pattern in this rug belongs to that lineage. Beige carries the ground. The plant work runs across the field in close tonal range, drawn so the eye reads orchard rather than ornament.
Three weavers shared the loom for close to six months. Around 2.5 million asymmetric knots were tied by hand against the cotton warp, each row packed into the previous with a metal comb. The pile is yarn-dyed hand-spun wool, the dye taken in the skein before warp setting, then luster washed at finishing to draw the lanolin back into the fibre. The beige is mid-warm undyed wool. The plant work uses dyes that lean plant rather than synthetic, which is why the surface carries small tonal drift across the field rather than reading as flat colour.
The composition
A wide beige field with the garden pattern running edge to edge in close tonal repeats, the border held in the same family of tones rather than as a contrast frame. The drawing is restrained throughout, the line widths kept narrow so the figure reads as suggestion rather than as outline. The colour will continue to settle for the first three years. The beige will warm into honey, the plant work will deepen by a quarter tone, and the rug will reach its true settled colour by the time it is five.
What you are buying
Antique Persian garden carpets at 8' x 10' with comparable condition and clean drawing trade through Sotheby's and Rippon Boswell at three to five times this asking price when they appear at auction in good state. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, hand-knotted on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, with mineral and plant-leaning dyes. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object on a floor with that property at this number.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds a primary living room arranged around a sofa and two armchairs with the rug under all the seating, or a dining table for six to eight with the chairs clear of the field. The beige garden palette pairs with walnut, oak, brass, leather, and unframed paper or canvas art. It holds against lime-washed walls and against panelled wood. The rug carries the room rather than fighting for it.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and foot traffic age the rug evenly across the face. Vacuum weekly with the suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years to lift embedded soil. The rug runs eighty to a hundred years with this care.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
