Floral carpets in the transitional tradition borrow the stem-and-leaf vocabulary of classical Persian weaving and slow it down for the modern room. The Elizabeth takes that approach with discipline. Long curling vines move across an ivory ground in faded rose, soft sage, and the pale sand brown that the trade calls oatmeal. The flowers themselves are drawn open rather than tightly packed, giving the eye places to rest and lengthening the apparent scale of the room.

Three weavers worked the loom in India over five and a half months. Around 1.7 million asymmetric knots tied against a vertical beam, each one beaten down with a wooden comb before the next row was loaded. The pile is pure New Zealand wool spun fine and luster washed at the end of weaving. The cotton foundation gives the rug a flat, stable hand that holds its rectangle for decades without buckling.

The composition

Ivory grounds carry a colour memory that synthetic-white grounds never accumulate. Direct light warms the ivory toward bone, lamp light warms it toward parchment, and over years the field deepens into the antiqued cream collectors prize. The rose and sage florals sit on that ground at a low contrast, which is what makes the rug read as quiet rather than busy. New Zealand wool takes the dye to a fine evenness that local fibres can never match because the staple length is longer and the lanolin content cleaner.

What you are buying

Comparable transitional florals from named ateliers in the West retail at three to four times this price. The rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp in India, in genuine New Zealand wool, with weaver-months of labour built into the pile. A floral hand-knotted at this density does not depreciate from a hundred-rupee value; it appreciates as the ivory matures and the rose softens.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical living-room scale for an Indian apartment with a primary sofa and a pair of accent chairs. The Elizabeth ivory ground brightens dark hardwood floors and pairs beautifully with linen, walnut, and brushed nickel. The pale palette acts as a riser for jewel-toned upholstery without competing with it.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn every spring and autumn so light wear distributes evenly across the field. Vacuum once a week on suction only, never with a beater bar. Tend to spills immediately by blotting with a clean cotton cloth. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years preserves the pile and refreshes the ivory ground without stripping the dye.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
