Moroccan tile patterns made the long migration from Andalusian palace courtyards into the rug vocabulary of North Africa, then crossed again into Indian workshops where the tile motif was rescaled for the modern living room. The Morris Tile draws on that journey. Eight-pointed stars, interlocking quatrefoils, and small geometric infill repeat across a lemon yellow ground, the geometry tight enough to read as architecture and loose enough to keep the field from turning rigid. The lemon palette is unusual in the tradition. It pulls the design out of the courtyard and into the daylight of a contemporary room.

Three weavers worked the loom in India over five and a half months. Around 1.7 million asymmetric knots, hand-tied on a cotton warp and beaten down with a wooden comb. The pile is pure yarn-dyed wool spun fine, then luster washed at the end of weaving so the lemon arrives at a mellow buttercup tone rather than a glaring chrome. The rug is self-bound at the edge for a finish that holds for decades.

The composition

Lemon grounds catch directional light more readily than darker fields. In morning light the rug reads almost cream, in evening light it warms toward butter, and under lamps it settles into a soft gold. The tile geometry sits over the ground in deeper madder rust and ivory, with a thin black outline on each motif that gives the pattern its drawn quality. Over years of use the lemon will lose its highest brightness and mature into the antique yellow that collectors call old gold.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted Moroccan-pattern wool rugs at named Western retailers begin at four and a half lakh rupees and rise from there. The Morris Tile is a new weaving in the same tradition, hand-tied on cotton in India in pure yarn-dyed wool. Hand-knotted wool at this density appreciates with use, where every other floor object depreciates the moment it ships.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds a full living room or anchors a six-to-eight seater dining table. Lemon grounds pair particularly well with concrete or terrazzo floors and with white-painted brick walls. The rug warms a room with limited natural light and brightens a room with cooler grey upholstery. It pairs poorly with strongly patterned curtains; the tile motif expects to be the only graphic element below the wall line.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Weekly suction vacuum, no beater bar. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge in. Engage a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years for a hand wash that refreshes the lemon without stripping the dye.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
