Hand-spun wool is the only fibre that takes the differential dye lots a patchwork composition needs without flattening the colour relationships into uniformity. Mill-spun yarn dyes too evenly; the panels would read as printed rather than as woven. The rust and gold field in this rug relies on that hand-spun irregularity to carry weight. Each square holds its own slight variation in tone, and the eye reads the assembly as a single field rather than as a grid of repeated tiles.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for around four months. The pile is hand-spun wool tied in the Persian asymmetric, with the squares arranged in an irregular grid so no two neighbouring panels share a motif or a dye lot. After the rug came off the loom it received a hand-shearing pass: select panels were lowered in pile to give the surface a tactile relief that mill-finished patchworks cannot replicate.
The composition
Rust dominates with gold supporting, and a small constellation of cream and faded indigo motifs run through the squares. The sheared panels sit recessed against the full-pile panels, so the rug has a quiet topography that registers under raking light. The dye work draws on madder, walnut, and oak gall, which means the colour will deepen and warm with age rather than fade. Pairs naturally with bleached oak, walnut, brass, and unpolished stone.
What you are buying
Cut-and-recombined antique patchworks regularly sell at five to eight thousand dollars in this scale at the European dealers. This rug was tied fresh on a single loom, which means the cotton foundation is continuous and the wool stable. A hand-knotted wool rug of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the price reflects a clearance position rather than a comment on the work.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a smaller living room, a primary bedroom from the foot of the bed forward, or a study with a desk and a reading chair. The rust and gold palette settles against walnut floors, leather upholstery, and warm-white walls. Pairs poorly with strongly patterned wallpaper; the rug expects to be the graphic anchor of the room.
Conservation
Rotate every six months so footfall distributes evenly across the panel grid. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Spot clean spills with a cotton cloth and cool water; aggressive scrubbing will smooth out the differential pile heights that give the rug its character. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to six years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
