Recycled silk pile is one of the more recent additions to the hand-knotted repertoire and one of the more interesting. The fibre comes from vintage saris and other silk garments collected through textile recycling channels in India, unraveled by hand, and re-spun into knotting yarn that carries the colour history of its previous lives. The Eros series in this fibre uses a controlled grey-and-rust palette to give the recycled silk a single coherent reading, where the older random multi-colour sari rugs let the recycled story do all the work.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for around four months on this knotted version. Recycled sari silk was spun into yarn of consistent thickness, dipped in mordant baths to fix the inherited colour, and then over-dyed where needed to bring the field into the grey-and-rust register. Knots were tied row by row against a vertical beam at a working silk density, with the foundation in undyed cotton drawn tight enough to support the lustre of the silk pile.

The composition

The grey field carries the rust as soft, ikat-like incidents rather than as hard geometric panels. Silk pile shifts colour as the viewer moves: from one direction the rust dominates, from another the grey takes over. The pile is shorter than a wool rug, which gives the surface its sheen and lets the colour carry as light reflection rather than as pigment mass. The whole composition reads as a single considered ground rather than as a busy collage.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted recycled silk rugs at this scale and density from named Western retailers list at the equivalent of three to five lakh. This is the same fibre, the same knot type, the same dye logic. A silk rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, in part because the surface develops a burnish and in part because the recycled story gives the rug a provenance no new-fibre weaving can match.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) is the right scale for a bedside placement, a study under a single chair, or a primary bedroom corner. The grey-and-rust silk palette pairs naturally with limewashed walls, raw oak floors, brass casework, and undyed linen. Direct light brings out the silk lustre; soft ambient light lets the colour read as a quiet ground.

Conservation

Silk asks for more careful handling than wool. Vacuum only on suction, ideally through a mesh, never with a rotary brush. Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cotton cloth. Do not attempt home wet cleaning on silk; a silk-trained specialist should clean the rug every four to five years to preserve the lustre and reset the pile.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
