Tufted construction is the working format for contemporary rug design. It carries a saturated wool pile, holds the drawing crisply, and lets the studio iterate on a piece at room scale rather than at a sample swatch. This rug uses that format to deliver a considered field at honest cost; the drawing is the work, the construction is the support.
This piece was made in India over around five weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool was loaded into the gun and pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was made by hand with long shears, relieving the pattern above the field by a few millimetres so the drawing reads at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The whole rug was washed once before despatch to settle the pile.
The composition
The composition is built around a saturated green and gold ground with the drawing brought up by a sculpted relief in the finishing pass. Yarn-dyed wool keeps the colour reading clean across the field; the relief keeps the pattern crisp at room scale; and the New Zealand staple gives the surface a faint sheen that catches the lamps in a evening room.
The piece in a room
A 5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) format works as a primary bedroom or a medium living area. The green and gold field gives the room an axis. Walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather sit comfortably on it; the geometry pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the only graphic element holding the floor.
Care
Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot, do not rub, when something spills. Light shedding for the first month is normal and does not affect the pile density. A professional dry clean every three years restores the colour and lifts compaction in heavy-traffic spots.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
