By the late nineteenth century, the Ziegler workshops were producing the carpets that defined the Anglo-American drawing room. A Swiss firm had set up a buying office in northern Persia and was commissioning weavers to soften the dense floral repeats of classical Persia into the open, airy fields that the new generation of collectors preferred. The rug in front of you is a direct descendant of that lineage, scaled and tonally adjusted for a contemporary grey palette.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for close to seven months. Wool pile worked on a cotton foundation with the Persian asymmetric knot, vegetable-dyed in copper vats with madder root for the warmer accents and oak gall for the steel-grey ground. The wool was selected for its long staple and its capacity to hold the deep, slightly desaturated grey that the Ziegler register requires without flattening into uniformity.

The composition

A grey ground that reads steel from a distance and resolves into pewter, dove, and graphite up close. Vine work in faded ivory and soft rust runs corner to corner with the irregular grace that vegetable dye produces. The border is restrained, a single muted band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser Ziegler pieces busy. The colour will not stay still; the grey deepens with use and the rust accents will warm into amber over the next decade.

The grey ground holds against pale walls, against dark walnut joinery, and against linen upholstery. Direct sunlight is welcome; UV gradually restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out of vegetable-dyed wool.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlasts its first owner.
