Red and gold are the oldest pairing in the Persian rug vocabulary because madder and saffron were the first dyes the loom learned to take. The combination read as ceremony for centuries. In contemporary Indian workshops working from inherited cartoons, the same palette is calibrated down to drawing-room weight, the reds steadied with rust, the golds softened with ochre, the contrast governed.
Three weavers shared the upright loom for around five months. Hand-spun wool was lowered into copper vats charged with madder root for the reds and a combination of pomegranate skin and weld for the gold tones. The piece is tied at roughly 150 Persian-asymmetric knots per square inch on a cotton warp, and finished with a hand-shear that brings the pile to a uniform ten millimetres.
The composition
A central medallion in oxidised gold over a deep rust ground, with floral arabesques in ivory and a closing border in faded indigo. The reds are not flat. Madder produces an irregular saturation that catches differently as the eye moves across the rug, and that irregularity is the proof of natural dye. The piece will warm by half a value over the first decade and the gold will move toward antique amber.
What you are buying
Comparable hand-knotted Persian-tradition rugs at this size and density are listed at three to four lakh through dealers in London and New York. The rug here is offered at a fraction of that because it ships directly from the workshop. A wool rug of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the inverse of nearly every other object you place in a home.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a formal living room or sits cleanly under a dining table set for six. The red ground asks for warm whites or deep wood walls, and pairs with brass lighting, leather upholstery, and dark stained oak. Avoid cool grey walls; they fight the madder.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged so the pile is not torn at the knot. Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Spills lift with a damp cotton cloth pressed against the pile rather than dragged across it. A specialist hand-wash every five years restores lanolin and removes embedded grit. With this care the rug runs three generations.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
