Ivory and red is the oldest coupling in the Persian rug vocabulary. Madder root yields a red whose tone shifts with the mineral content of the water; undyed wool gives the ivory its faint warmth. Together they have anchored court carpets, tribal kilims, and village rugs for six centuries. This rug carries the convention forward at a domestic scale, holding the saturation of red against an ivory ground broad enough to keep the colour from overwhelming the room.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for approximately five months in India to finish this piece. The foundation is cotton; the pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in batches small enough that the red carries dye-lot variation rather than industrial uniformity. After the cut, the rug was washed in clean water, sun-dried on grass, and finished with a hand shear to even the pile and bring the drawing forward.
The composition
Ivory ground holding around two-thirds of the field, red running through the floral repeat and the principal border, accents of soft indigo and walnut at the corner medallions. The red has an orange shift where the dye took heavily and a brick-rose shift where it took lightly, which gives the colour body. The drawing is curvilinear, lyrical rather than crowded, with negative space honoured between motifs.
What you are buying
An ivory-and-red hand-knotted Indian wool rug at 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) bought through a Western dealer typically runs three to five lakh. Bought directly through Rugsville, the same loom-time and material come in below one lakh. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the red softens into a coral-rose patina over a decade rather than dulling.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a sitting room around a sectional or a pair of facing sofas, leaving a comfortable margin of floor at each edge. The red speaks well to walnut and rosewood furniture, to brass and unlacquered copper, and to white-washed plaster walls; against grey-washed walls it holds its own without becoming strident. The ivory keeps the rug from ever reading as heavy.
Conservation
Rotate every six months to balance the way the red catches direct sun. Vacuum weekly using suction alone, never the beater bar. Treat spills with cold water and a clean cotton cloth, working from the outer edge inward. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every six years to refresh lustre and clear dust deep in the pile.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
