Pairing ivory with camel at drawing-room scale produces a rug that performs the role classical Persian work was made for: setting a quiet, warm ground that lets the rest of a room speak. The combination is older than the catalogue traditions of the nineteenth century. It comes out of village looms that worked with the natural pigments of local sheep first and added ivory accents only where the design called for them. The drawing carries forward in this rug at a generous nine-by-twelve scale.

Three to four weavers worked the loom for roughly six months in India to bring this rug off the beam. The pile is hand-spun wool with the camel ground left undyed, retaining the natural depth that desert flocks produce. Ivory motifs were either undyed or gently lightened. Knots were tied one at a time against a cotton warp, with weft passes laid in between rows; after cutting the rug was washed, sun-dried, and hand-sheared to a level pile.

The composition

An expansive camel field with ivory vine work scrolling through an all-over pattern. The drawing is curvilinear and steady, evenly distributed across the rug, with no medallion to break the rhythm. Borders are restrained, layered into a single composed band rather than fanning into multiple ornate guard rows. Up close the camel reveals tonal striation from the unblended wool. From a distance the field reads as a warm, neutral plane.

What you are buying

A 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) hand-knotted Indian wool rug of this quality and scale routinely retails between four and eight lakh through Western galleries and dealers. Rugsville prices reflect direct loom-to-shipper sourcing, which is the only way to deliver this piece below one lakh. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the natural camel ground deepens slowly into a richer biscuit tone over the years.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the drawing-room rug in the literal sense. It seats an eight to ten place dining setting, a full long-sofa-and-two-armchair arrangement, or a king bed with a sitting bench and side tables fully on the rug. Walnut floors complement the camel ground; lighter oak floors let the rug read as the warmest plane in the composition. Pair with linen, brass, and oil-rubbed bronze.

Conservation

Rotate the rug 180 degrees every spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off and the suction set medium. Spills come up with cool water and a clean cotton cloth, blotted from the perimeter inward. Plan a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Properly maintained, the rug will run eighty years and be a serious piece of inheritance to a future occupant.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
