The green-ground Persian rug has a quieter history than its red cousin. Where red was the colour of court reception rooms and trade-facing salons, green belonged to the inner chambers and the libraries, dyed from indigo over-bathed in weld or buckthorn, layered to land somewhere between sage and forest depending on the season the wool was lifted. The design here works in that interior tradition, an ivory medallion floating above a deep botanical green field.

The loom carried four weavers across roughly eight months of continuous work. Knots were tied with the Persian asymmetric draw, single strand passed around two warps and sealed with a weft beat down hard at the close of each row. The wool was hand-spun from a highland fleece, the colour built in successive plant baths, indigo first to lay the blue ground for the green and weld second to push it toward the chlorophyll register. Cotton warps and wefts give the foundation the dimensional stability a piece this size needs to lie flat for decades.

The composition

A green field, an ivory pole medallion, indigo and ochre vines moving through both. The borders are layered in three guard bands rather than one, framing the field without crowding it. The visual rhythm is botanical rather than architectural. The green will shift slowly across the years as indigo deepens and weld softens, settling toward a richer, slightly cooler tone than the day it leaves the loom.

What you are buying

Antique Persian carpets in 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) on a green ground are scarce. The original dye chemistry produced inconsistent results and most surviving examples sit in museum collections or private holdings that rarely change hands. Equivalent pieces clear the major auction houses in the forty-to-eighty-thousand-dollar range when they do appear. This is a current weaving on the same construction principles, made to be used and to age into value rather than depreciate from the moment of purchase.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the scale of a substantial living room or formal dining floor. The green field reads coolly against pale plaster walls and pulls toward warm against deep wood panelling. Antique brass and aged oak suit it, as do upholstered pieces in oatmeal linen, undyed cotton, or tobacco leather. The medallion takes a coffee table or low ottoman directly above it without losing its visual centre.

Conservation

Rotate the rug twice a year so direct light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted off the pile. Address spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, blotting toward the centre of the spot. Schedule a professional hand wash every five to seven years with a wool-trained conservator. With care, the rug carries forward eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
