Flatweaving belongs to a tradition that stretches from Anatolia across the Caucasus and into the Indian subcontinent. The technique uses no pile; the pattern is the weft. The finished piece is light, reversible, and reads as a graphic field on the floor. A well-made flatweave outlasts most pile carpets simply because there is no pile to wear.
Built in India over three weeks. A single weaver sat at a floor loom, working silk weft across a cotton warp, beating down each pass with a comb so the field stays dense and the colour reads cleanly from one side to the other. The structure is honest: nothing is hidden behind a pile, the drawing is the rug.
The composition
The composition reads first at a distance: a calm multicoloured field, with the geometry drawn cleanly across it. Closer in, the small irregularities only a hand loom produces. The flatweave gains a soft sheen with use, and the colour stays honest because the dye sits in the wool itself rather than on a printed surface.
On the weaving
A note on the wool: hand-spun yarn carries small variations in thickness and twist that no machine spinning can replicate. Those variations show up in the finished surface as a faint texture across the field, the visual signature of a piece made by hand rather than by a power loom. The colour is yarn-dyed before weaving, locking the pigment into the staple itself.
The piece in a room
The 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) format suits a corridor, a study, or under a side table. The multicoloured palette holds against soft bone, putty, or lime-washed plaster walls, and the rug pairs cleanly with walnut and rosewood furniture, leather seating, brass and bronze accents, linen drapery without competing for the room. Layering a smaller wool or hide over a corner gives the room a second register without breaking the main field.
Care
A flatweave wants gentle care. Vacuum on suction only, blot spills immediately, and air the piece outside in indirect light every six months to settle the wool. Professional dry cleaning every two to three years keeps the colour clean. The structure is reversible and forgiving, and small repairs to the binding are straightforward for a textile conservator if a corner does start to fray.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
