Light blue overdye carpets occupy a particular niche in the contemporary tradition. The whole rug was then submerged in a single immersion bath of light blue dye that the aged wool fibres absorbed at slightly varying intensities, leaving a calm icy field with the architectural detail of the underlying drawing visible as a soft ghost beneath.

The composition

A pale, glacial blue across the entire field, with the original Ziegler-tradition vine and palmette drawing surfacing beneath as a deeper-blue under-pattern. The whole reads at distance as a calm tonal field and at close range as a layered textile object with two distinct chromatic events visible at the same time. Surface variation in the hand-spun wool keeps the blue alive under interior light. The colour will continue to settle further into the fibre over the next decade.
