Light blue overdye carpets occupy a particular niche in the contemporary tradition. The shade reads as fresh and architectural rather than as nautical or saturated, sitting closer to the colour of glacial ice than to the colour of a mid-century swimming pool. Achieving that quality across a hand-knotted wool field requires both a careful overdye recipe and a substrate forgiving enough to absorb the colour without going pastel. Vintage wool with its decades of accumulated pigment provides exactly that kind of substrate.

The 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) rug was woven in India by three weavers across roughly four months in the traditional overdye sequence. The base was a previously knotted Ziegler-tradition wool field, woven on a cotton warp, washed and sheared back to a uniform low pile. The whole rug was then submerged in a single immersion bath of light blue dye that the aged wool fibres absorbed at slightly varying intensities, leaving a calm icy field with the architectural detail of the underlying drawing visible as a soft ghost beneath.

The composition

A pale, glacial blue across the entire field, with the original Ziegler-tradition vine and palmette drawing surfacing beneath as a deeper-blue under-pattern. The whole reads at distance as a calm tonal field and at close range as a layered textile object with two distinct chromatic events visible at the same time. Surface variation in the hand-spun wool keeps the blue alive under interior light. The colour will continue to settle further into the fibre over the next decade.

What you are buying

Overdyed Ziegler-tradition carpets at this size sell at Western interior dealers in the three to five thousand pound range. The pricing on this listing represents direct workshop sourcing from India and bypasses the re-sale margin entirely. The base wool itself was already a complete hand-knotted rug before the overdye, which means the rug arrives with a depth of construction that the dye colour merely inflects. Use only deepens the patina across the years.

The piece in a room

Light blue at eight by ten reads as a fresh, architectural ground. The rug supports white plaster walls and warm timber floors beautifully. Sits cleanly under a long sofa with the front legs on the field, or in a primary bedroom under the foot of a king bed. Pairs cleanly with cream linen, oatmeal bouclé, brass, and walnut. Reads especially well in north-facing rooms where the blue picks up daylight and warms the architecture.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills promptly with a clean dry cotton cloth from the outside in. Schedule a wool conservator wash every five to seven years. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on any single strip. With this care the rug runs into multiple generations of useful life.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
