The multi-colour patchwork is the technique in its most honest form. No single overdye to unify the field, no chromatic discipline imposed from outside. Each fragment carries forward its original colour, its own drawing, its own history. The composition is built by hand from the sequencing of those panels, the way a curator hangs an exhibition rather than the way a designer chooses a palette. The result reads as both more antique and more graphic than the single-colour members of the family.

Three weavers worked across roughly four months on this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) rug. Source fragments were drawn from older village carpets across the wool belt that runs through eastern Turkey into the southern Caucasus. Each panel was lightly washed to clean the surface but not stripped of pigment as in the single-overdye versions. The panels were then trimmed to a uniform pile, joined by hand with cotton thread, supported by a fresh cotton foundation, and warm-washed once more as a finished object.

The composition

Reds sit next to deep blues. A faded ivory ground in one panel meets a saturated indigo in the next. Sections of stylised botanical run into geometric medallions. The patches are not laid in to disappear into one another. They are laid in to argue. The whole rug reads as a kind of suite, a deliberately curated collage of older weaving traditions that gives the eye somewhere to travel for the duration of looking.

What you are buying

Multi-colour patchworks in this format trade at Western galleries between $5,500 and $11,500 depending on the quality of the source fragments. This rug arrives at £4,399 against an MSRP of £,77,300, which is a clearance-tier position rather than a routine retail one. The rug is structurally unrepeatable. The constituent panels are themselves unrepeatable. Hand-knotted wool of this make-up appreciates rather than depreciates as the surface ages.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) takes a sofa-and-two-chair primary grouping or supports a six-seater dining floor. Multi-colour patchwork is the most demanding member of the family for the rest of the room. The rug expects pared-back upholstery in a single fabric and a single colour. White or limewashed walls hold it best. Wood floors in pale oak or grey-washed pine support the rug without competing with the colour story already inside it.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only. Beater bars are particularly damaging to multi-colour patchworks because the seams between fragments are the most fragile part of the rug. Rotate the rug each March and September so wear stays even. Blot spills immediately with cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every seven years to refresh the lanolin and lock the original colours.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
