A red overdye sits in conversation with a long history. The classical carpets of central Persia, the Turkmen tents of the steppe, the Caucasian dragon rugs of the seventeenth century all relied on madder and cochineal to push wool into the red register. The contemporary overdye honours that lineage by sending old wool, much of it carrying its own original red, through a final saturation bath that unifies the field. The result is a confident chromatic statement built on layered red histories. This rug sits inside that line of descent.
Three weavers worked the loom for approximately four months. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at standard pile using the symmetric knot. The completed rug was cut into rectangular panels along the grain, hand-stitched back together, then lowered into a red aniline bath calibrated to lift the legacy colours partway rather than burning them away. The pile was sheared down to eight millimetres before the final dressing pass. The seam grid stays visible as part of the structure.
The composition
A field of confident red moving across panels from scarlet through to burgundy, with traces of oxidised gold, faded indigo, soft cream, and old olive coming through as ghost imagery. The colour reads warm under tungsten light and cooler under daylight. Some panels lean closer to brick, some hold true red, a few sit near terracotta. The seams introduce a regular architectural grid that grounds the chromatic energy of the field.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted overdyed patchworks of this construction list at international dealers in the 1,850 to 3,000 GBP range at this size. Here the price is 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, which reflects direct workshop economics. The base wool is itself old, so the structure has already settled, the lanolin has stabilised, and the rug arrives carrying the patina that newly woven carpets only develop after years of household use.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) handles a primary sitting area with two facing sofas or a six-seat dining footprint. Red of this saturation pairs with quiet walls in plaster, bone, soft grey, sage, or chalk white. Walnut, mahogany, blackened oak, leather, brass, and linen all hold against the field. Avoid pinks and oranges in the same composition; they fight the red rather than supporting it. One strong artwork on the wall is enough.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly with the rotating brush off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed straight down. Schedule a wool-trained conservator hand-wash every five years to lift accumulated soil from the cotton foundation. With this protocol the rug runs seventy years under domestic conditions and the red continues to deepen rather than oxidising toward orange.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
