The Ziegler workshops, founded in central Persia by a Manchester firm in 1883, produced the long floor-runners that lined the corridors of Edwardian country houses and the entrance halls of New York apartment buildings on the Upper East Side. The pattern in this beige runner descends directly from that lineage. It is what a corridor rug was meant to look like before twentieth-century factories started printing simulacra: an open, soft beige field with a vine of large palmettes running its full length and a quiet single border that does not interrupt the flow.

This 2'6" x 20' (76 x 610 cm) runner was knotted by a single weaver over roughly six months. New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, vegetable-dyed across a season of slow soaking in copper vats so the colours mature into the depth that synthetic dye cannot reach. The Persian asymmetric knot was used throughout, tied by feel against an upright beam.

The composition

A soft sand-beige ground with a single vine of palmettes running corner to corner. Within the palmettes, accents of muted indigo, oxidised rust, and walnut brown sit against the parchment field. The border is a single guard band, restrained and narrow. The colour is not stable. Vegetable dye continues to mature for years; the indigos will deepen, the rust will lighten, and the beige will warm into bone over the next decade.

What you are buying

Comparable Ziegler-tradition runners of this length sit between $3,500 and $6,500 at Western specialists. The MSRP on this piece reflects that benchmark. At the current price the runner is positioned well below auction comparables. Hand-knotted vegetable-dyed wool work appreciates with use. The pile compacts and gains lustre, the dyes mellow, and a runner of this length placed in a hallway becomes more beautiful at year ten than at year one.

The piece in a room

A 20-foot runner is for the long architectural corridors of older homes, gallery hallways, and the staircases of double-height entrance halls when used end to end. The narrow 2'6" width fits a standard hall. The beige ground works against limestone, oak floorboards, terracotta tile, and against pale plaster walls. Pair with a single mirror, a console, and one piece of art rather than a busy gallery wall.

Conservation

Rotate the runner end to end each season so foot traffic at the entrance does not concentrate the wear. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and cool water. A specialist hand wash every five years removes the urban dust that settles in corridor pieces faster than in living rooms.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
