By the late nineteenth century the workshops at Sultanabad in western Iran had developed a softer, airier register of Persian rug design intended for the Anglo-American market. A Swiss firm operating in the region commissioned weavers to open up the dense floral repeats of court tradition into ground colours that breathed, with vine work that read as drawing rather than ornament. The pattern in this rug descends directly from that lineage.
Three weavers shared the upright loom in northern India for around six months. The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied row by row against the vertical beam. Madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall carried the palette, each one matured in copper for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The dye programme is the same one the Sultanabad workshops used in the 1890s, carried into a contemporary weaving.
The composition
An open ivory ground carries a generous Herati vine in soft rust and indigo. The vine drawing is loose and confident, with corner spandrels in the deeper indigo balancing the field rather than crowding it. The border is restrained, a single guard band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser Sultanabads busy. The colour is not stable. Over the next decade the ivory will warm to bone, the indigos will deepen, and the rust will lighten. A vegetable dyed Sultanabad arrives ready to start, not finished.
What you are buying
Antique Sultanabads with 1900-1920 attribution and comparable condition sell at international auction in the range of fifteen to forty lakh equivalent when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same density, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object at any price you put on a floor with that property.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing room scale, intended for a sectional sofa or a long dining table seating ten to twelve as the work the room is arranged around. Mid tone walls hold the saturation. Brass and aged bronze read well above the field. Direct sunlight helps; UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age it evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five years. With this care, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
