Grey is the quietest of all rug grounds and one of the hardest to weave in silk. Pure cool grey can read as flat under warm interior light, and pure warm grey starts to creep toward beige. Sari silk solves the problem because the recycled fibre carries faint traces of dozens of older sari dyes, and a grey hand-spun from those cuttings ends up holding faint blue, faint mauve, and faint olive at the same time. The eye reads it as grey but the room reads it as alive.

About three weavers shared the loom for roughly six months to complete this 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) piece. The Eros pattern was tied row by row against a vertical beam, with the cotton warps tensioned by hand and the silk pile clipped to a low height so that the drawing sits crisp on the surface. Each knot was set by feel rather than by template, which is why the geometry has the gentle irregularity that hand-knotting always carries.

The composition

A muted grey field carries floral and tribal motifs in faded ivory, soft rose, and hints of old gold. Because sari silk catches light directionally, the rug appears lighter from one side of the room and deeper from the other. The pattern is balanced rather than centred; there is no single focal medallion, which means the piece works under furniture rather than competing with it.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted sari silk carpets at 9' x 12' are an emerging category in serious collecting circles, and comparable workshop pieces sell through Western dealers at four to seven lakh when they carry a clear lineage. The MSRP on this rug reflects that comparable; the asked price is well below it because Rugsville sells direct from the workshop. Silk pile on cotton holds and gains value over decades because the input fibre is finite and the labour cannot be mechanised.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is large enough to define an open-plan living area or a formal drawing room. A grey ground is the most architecturally cooperative colour for a floor, which is why it pairs well with almost any wall, art, or upholstery. The piece sits especially well with cool whites, cement or stone, walnut, brushed steel, and modern abstract painting.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged and only the suction nozzle in contact with the pile. Rotate the rug a half turn at each change of season to even out traffic and sunlight. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth, never rub silk. Schedule a hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. Treated this way the piece outlasts its first room and gains a soft sheen across decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
