Tribal weaving is the oldest layer of the rug tradition. Long before the court workshops formalised the floral repeats of the seventeenth century, nomadic weavers in central Asia were tying small geometric motifs into wool and silk runners that they could fold and carry between camps. This rug takes that older tribal vocabulary, the blurred ikat lattice and the off-axis medallion, and translates it into reclaimed sari silk at a scale the original makers would never have attempted.

Four weavers worked the loom in India for about six months. The pile is sari silk recovered from hand-loomed garments, washed, sorted by colour, and re-spun before being dyed in small lots. The knots are tied with the Persian asymmetric loop against a cotton warp and weft. Sari silk does not behave like mulberry silk. The strands are uneven and high-lustre, and that unevenness is what gives the field its slow visual movement under raking light.

The composition

A deep indigo blue ground built in two dye passes, the first a base of natural indigo and the second a softer wash that tunes the saturation. Ikat motifs in oxidised silver and pomegranate move in irregular vertical bands across the field with the soft dye fronts that resist tying produces. The borderless drawing pushes the rug into contemporary territory despite the antiquity of the technique. In lamplight the blue reads almost black at the corners and shifts toward navy at the centre.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted silk rug of this scale and design vocabulary trades through Western design galleries at three to five times the price you are looking at. This is a contemporary weaving made by hand in India in reclaimed sari silk, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Silk pile patinas slowly into something closer to vintage velvet, and the value of the work compounds over the first two decades.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) makes a defined ground for a long dining table or for a double-sofa drawing room. Blue at this saturation works against pale plaster, against bone-coloured upholstery, and against polished walnut. It pairs poorly with strong patterns elsewhere in the room. The rug expects to be the only graphic element in the composition.

Conservation

Vacuum monthly with a soft hand attachment, suction only, never a beater bar. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth on contact and avoid scrubbing the pile. A silk-trained specialist should hand wash the rug every three to five years. Move furniture by lifting rather than sliding so the silk tufts are not crushed. With that regimen the rug has a working life of six to eight decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
