The Varsari design draws on the vegetable-dyed Persian revival carpets that came out of village workshops at the turn of the twentieth century. Hand-spun natural wool, plant dyes, an all-over field of small geometric incident: the rug sits quietly and reveals slowly.

2 weavers, 5 months on a vertical beam. Persian asymmetric knotting throughout the field. The fibre is wool, hand-spun, and slightly uneven at the strand, which is what gives the rug its lived patina. The dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall, each one matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

Neutral cream and stone. Small geometric repeats over a soft ground, no single focal point, the border holding the field without crowding. Over time the saturations soften, the contrasts ease, and the rug develops the patina that distinguishes a long-lived hand-knotted piece from a printed reproduction.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted rug in this lineage, woven on a cotton foundation in wool pile. Pieces in this idiom are made for the long term: they shed slightly in the first weeks, settle into the floor over the first year, and gather patina over decades. The rug sits in the same workshop tradition as the pieces that pass through international auction with provenance.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as a defining floor element under primary seating, a dining table, or as the anchor of a bedroom. The neutral palette pairs with mid-tone walls, walnut or oak floors, and a relaxed mix of upholstery materials. Direct daylight settles the saturation; lamp-lit evenings deepen the darker passages. The drawing reads cleanly across the room and rewards a closer look on approach. The rug expects to be the work the room is arranged around, not flooring underneath the furniture.

Conservation

Half-turn rotation each season to even out wear. Weekly vacuuming with the beater off, suction only. For spills, a clean dry cotton towel pressed into the pile, never scrubbed. A professional hand wash every five to six years. Under this regime the rug is a multi-generation object; it does not wear out, it gains patina.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.

Have a question about this rug?
