Berber weavers worked without cartoons. The pattern lived in the head of the maker and travelled down through the loom by memory, with each row of knots set against the row above by feel rather than against a drawn template. That is why the diamond grids and looping lines on a Beni Ourain rug never resolve into perfect symmetry, and why every authentic example of the form has its own internal logic. This 6' x 9' piece carries the same logic into a finer, longer-piled spec than the village originals.

Three weavers tied this rug over roughly five months on a vertical loom in northern India. The wool is hand-carded and hand-spun before dyeing, which preserves the long staple length sheep wool needs to felt without matting. The ivory ground is undyed, the dark lines are walnut-hull dyed for a deep sepia rather than a flat black. The pile sits at twenty millimetres, longer than the more common ten-millimetre commercial Beni Ourain spec, which gives the rug the soft sculptural surface that the original form is known for.

The composition

The field is silver-grey, almost ivory, with sparse dark lines tracing a loose lattice. The lines wander, thicken, and thin in places, never resolving into geometric rigour. Where the dye took less, the lines fade into mist. The surface reads as a single plane of considered tonal variation rather than as a pattern. The longer pile catches sidelight and softens further over time as the wool relaxes under foot.

What you are buying

Genuine vintage Beni Ourain pieces of this era and condition trade through Paris dealers and Marrakech ateliers between 5,000 and 12,000 euros. This is a contemporary rug woven to the same density and pile as the rugs collectors covet, in the same handspun fibre, off the same kind of vertical loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the long pile compacts into a dense felted hand prized in collector circles.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) takes the floor of a generous primary bedroom, anchors a sofa-and-pair-of-chairs grouping in a living area, or carries a long dining table for six. The neutral palette in silver and warm brown sits well with bleached oak, brass, raw linen, walnut, and white plaster. The rug welcomes minimal interiors and survives layered ones.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end to end every six months. Vacuum gently with the beater bar lifted; long pile resents being scrubbed. Blot any moisture immediately with a dry cotton cloth. Once every six years a professional wool conservator should hand wash the rug to restore the loft and remove fine grit from the cotton foundation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.

Have a question about this rug?

We are happy to answer questions about size, material, weave technique, sample availability, custom orders, lead times, or anything else. Average reply time is under an hour during UK business hours (Mon–Fri, 9am–6pm GMT).
