Maara is a sub-vocabulary within the Beni Ourain tradition, named for the diamond-and-cross drawing that runs through the field at calculated intervals. The format owes its character to the long-stapled mountain wool from which the original tribal weaving was made, and the contemporary Indian translation here preserves that pile depth alongside the same austere chromatic discipline. Ivory ground concentrates the eye on the geometry rather than on the colour conversation.
Three weavers spent close to five months on this 8 by 10 ft (244 by 305 cm) hand-knotted piece on a vertical loom in India. Hand-spun wool was knotted with the asymmetric Persian knot onto a cotton warp at moderate density, the standard for the long-pile Beni Ourain format. The pile was left long, in keeping with the tribal vocabulary, where the wool depth carries part of the chromatic argument. Total labour runs to roughly fifteen weaver-months.
The composition
An ivory wool field carrying the natural tonal variation of the original fleece. Dark brown lines run through the field in diamond and cross drawing, irregularly spaced rather than tiled, which is the structural sign of village-source work. The freehand quality of the geometry distinguishes the rug from the precision of court weaving. Ivory warms with use; the dark lines deepen toward black, and the long pile develops particular patina across the years.
What you are buying
Vintage Beni Ourain rugs of this scale and condition at international gallery dealers list at $5,000 to $14,000. New gallery weavings in the same lineage list at $3,500 to $8,500. The Rs 1.64 lac MSRP places this rug at fair gallery parity. Hand-knotted construction extends the working life of the piece well beyond a tufted equivalent. The long-pile format ages especially well; the wool develops patina that low-pile work cannot match.
The piece in a room
8 by 10 ft (244 by 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom with a king bed, a medium living area with three seats and two armchairs, or an eight-seater dining setup. The ivory field pairs with mid-century walnut, brushed brass, white plaster walls, and natural linen. The shaggy pile reads softer than a low-pile rug and asks for less formal architecture above it.
Conservation
Quarter-turn each season for even ageing under traffic and light. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; long-pile rugs benefit from periodic manual fluffing between vacuums to redistribute the pile. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Conservator hand-wash every five to seven years. The piece runs sixty to eighty years of working life with this regime.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Customer Reviews
Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
