By the late 1800s the workshops of the Sultanabad region in western Iran were producing the carpets that defined the Anglo-American drawing room. The lineage of this weaving traces directly to those looms. What you are looking at is the contemporary chapter of that tradition.

2 weavers worked the loom over 3 months. Each knot was tied by hand with a hooked steel knife, the wefts passed and beaten into place with a heavy comb after every row. The dye lots were prepared in batches matched against a master skein to hold the colour consistent across the field. The piece is offered at 4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) in a tan register, made in India.

The composition

Tan carries the field. The drawing is built on contrast that resolves into harmony rather than tension. The dominant colour holds the field, the secondary values trace the figure, and the smallest accents punctuate the corners. The composition reads in a single take from a doorway and rewards a slower look from a chair. The pattern photographs differently than it reads in person, which is true of every wool surface and one reason rugs of this calibre are ideally seen in the room they will live in before purchase.

The piece in a room

At 4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug behaves as an accent ground. In a foyer, beside a bed, in a dressing room, or under a small reading chair where colour and pattern read at conversational distance. The size suits rooms where the rug should add a focal note rather than carry the entire floor surface.

Conservation

A half rotation each season equalises the ageing of the pile against light and traffic. Vacuum weekly, suction only, never with a beater bar. Blot spills, never rub. Hand-wash every five years by a conservator who understands wool foundations. The piece is built for at least three generations of use. Insurance is worth carrying on any hand-knotted rug of this calibre, since the replacement value moves with the price of hand-spun wool and the dwindling supply of skilled weavers.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
