The trellis motif survives because it does its work without insisting. A composition that lays a quiet order across the floor and lets the room speak above it. The same logic underpins much of the architectural ornament you encounter without naming, the cast-iron screens and the tile work and the painted ceilings that hold a room without claiming it.
The rug was hand-tufted over about two weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting tool, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was hand shearing to bring the trellis drawing into relief above the beige field.
The composition
A beige ground holds the rug. The trellis drawing sits inside it without forcing contrast, so the geometry registers as part of the field rather than printed on top. The colour will warm slightly with use, the way wool always does, and the pattern will read more clearly as the surface settles. Sunlight falling across the rug brings out the secondary tones, and evening lamp light pushes the warmer values forward.
The piece in a room
At 2' x 3' (61 × 91 cm), the rug works at a doorway, beside a bed as a step-out, in a reading nook beside a single chair, or under a small altar in a prayer space. The beige register sits comfortably with stone, terrazzo, and warm hardwood. At this scale the rug behaves as a placed object rather than as flooring; treat it the way you would a small painting on the floor, with sight lines that frame it from at least one defined viewing position. The piece also works layered over a larger neutral as a graphic accent.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of its price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never scrub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile. Professional dry clean every three years. The latex backing has a service life of fifteen to twenty years; expect to recondition or replace at that point if the surface is still in good order.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
