The Tibetan loom uses a rod technique unique to the region. The yarn is looped around a horizontal rod across the warp, then cut to release the pile in a single pass. The result is a softer, more open knot than the Persian asymmetric, suited to the high-twist Himalayan wool that does not take a tight knot well. The technique has been carried into India by the diaspora and refined for contemporary work. The rug under consideration here carries that lineage forward.

The loom carried 2 weavers for 4 months of continuous work. Each row of knots was pressed with a steel comb, the pile sheared row by row to keep the surface flat. The cotton foundation was warped under tension calculated so the rug lays flat without curling at the edges. The rug is offered in an ivory register, made in India.

The composition

The ground reads ivory. The motifs sit in measured intervals across the field, with the border holding the composition rather than competing with it. The wool will lighten in the high-light areas over the next decade and the dyes will deepen in the protected zones, the pattern of slow change every plant-dyed pile carries. The corners will not match exactly, which is the proof that a person rather than a printer made the surface. Pairs well with linen, leather, walnut, and oak. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.

The piece in a room

At the format here the rug suits a study, a smaller drawing room, or a primary bedroom. The composition pairs with mid-tone walls and warm wood furniture, and rises against off-white walls as a fielded ground. The size also works as the entry rug for a longer hall, with the pattern reading as one walks across it.

Conservation

Rotate end-for-end every six months so the foot traffic and the sunlight age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly on the lowest setting with the beater off. Address spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth and cool water. Schedule a hand-wash with a textile conservator every five years. The rug is built to outlive several rooms. Direct sunlight on the field is acceptable and even helpful, since UV restores the dye depth that filtered indoor light slowly dulls.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
