Light blue on a brown ground is one of the more unusual Ziegler combinations because blue and brown sit on opposite sides of the colour wheel and the rug has to manage that contrast without letting it become loud. The classical Persian solution was to soften the blue with an indigo-over-walnut bath and let the brown carry the lattice work, which keeps the contrast as a quiet conversation rather than a confrontation. The rug in front of you was drawn against that protocol.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five and a half months. Hand-spun wool was tied at moderate density on a cotton warp through the full length of the field. The light blue accents were dyed in a single careful indigo bath over a walnut undercoat, which is what gives the blue its slight warm shift away from a pure cool tone. The brown ground was drawn from walnut hull and oak gall combined, the rose tonics from madder root, and the rare deeper notes in the lattice from a measured indigo lot.
The composition
A warm brown field carrying a floral lattice in soft light blue, beige, and faded rose, contained by a single restrained border. The blue accents catch the eye in passing without claiming the field, which is the function the design was developed to perform. Read in morning light the blue pulls toward dove; in evening light it warms toward grey-blue, both registers the wool was prepared to hold. The brown will deepen by a half-tone over the next decade.
What you are buying
Vegetable-dyed Zieglers with true blue accents on a brown ground are among the scarcer combinations in the contemporary trade and sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, this is a piece woven to the antique density in hand-spun wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the unusual colour combination compounds that appreciation as the design becomes harder to source new.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. A brown ground with light blue accents pairs with cream plaster, washed linen, brass fittings, and walnut joinery, and against deeper blue or sage walls the rug reads as a considered ground rather than as a competing focal point. The borders show comfortably on three sides under a six-seater table.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the outer edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years and ask specifically for cool-water rinsing to protect the indigo work in the blue accents.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
