Transitional design as a category emerged when interior architects in the late twentieth century asked weavers for a softer reading of the classical Persian field. Less border, fewer guard bands, an opener centre, and a palette that reads as an architectural ground rather than a statement object. The Opera Transitional belongs to that lineage and is built for rooms where the rug is meant to settle the composition rather than dominate it.

About 1.4 to 1.7 million knots tied by feel across roughly five months of loom time. Two to three weavers worked the 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) frame, drawing on semi-worsted New Zealand wool for the pile and double-warped cotton for the foundation. The beige bath was prepared in a single dye sitting to avoid the lot-to-lot drift that gives field carpets their characteristic abrash. The pile was sheared to a low-medium height to keep the pattern sharp without losing underfoot warmth.

The composition

An almost monochrome beige field with a soft transitional pattern that reads as texture more than as motif. The beige carries the warm undertone of semi-worsted New Zealand wool. There is no central medallion, no heavy border, only a quiet tonal interplay across the field. A rug built for rooms where the pattern is supposed to whisper rather than state.

What you are buying

The same hand, fibre, and loom that produces carpets retailing at three times this entry in international dealer galleries. Hand-knotted wool on cotton, woven in India by named weavers working at a vertical loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other floor object with that property at any price point you can reach in this category.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) sits well in a medium living room with a three-seat sofa and two armchairs above it, in a primary bedroom with the bed centred and side tables on the rug, or in a small dining room with a four-seater table. The beige carries warm walls and supports cool walls. It pairs with oak, walnut, and natural-finish stone floors.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Address spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never with detergent. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every four to five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
