The Opera line was conceived as a transitional bridge between the formal Persian repertoire and the lighter palettes that contemporary Indian interiors have moved toward. The brown and rust pairing in this rug draws on the shahsavan tradition of warm earth grounds offset by terracotta accents, an old conversation between madder and walnut that the workshops of central Persia carried into India through generations of trained masters. The pattern reads classical at distance and softens into abstraction up close.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months. A blend of fine wool with a measured silk highlight runs through the pile, the silk catching light across the rust passages while the wool absorbs it across the brown ground. Knotting is asymmetric, hand-tied against a vertical beam in India, and the foundation is cotton. The silk content is what makes the rust passages shift in tone as you move around the room.

The composition

A dense brown ground holds the field. Rust spreads through the centre and along a measured border, with cream and ochre threads picking out the floral incidents. The silk is laid into the highlight passages so the rust appears to glow under directional light and settle when the room is lit evenly. The colour will deepen over the next decade as the wool oxidises slightly and the silk softens to a warmer cast.
