The Ziegler design lineage began in 1883, when a buying firm with offices in Manchester and Tabriz commissioned weavers to open up the dense floral repeats of classical Persia into something a Victorian drawing room could absorb. The result was a softer, more tonal rug with a beige or ivory ground and floral spray drawn in faded indigo, ochre, and rose. The Calais drawing in front of you sits squarely in that tradition.
Three weavers shared the loom for around five months to produce this 8' x 10' piece. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in modest batches so the beige ground carries the slight tonal abrash that distinguishes a hand-prepared rug from a chemically uniform one. Each knot was tied against a vertical beam, then trimmed by hand with long shears so the drawing reads cleanly under low household light.
The composition
A warm beige field, an open central medallion drawn in faded ochre and soft rose, vine scrolls running corner to corner with the relaxed asymmetry only a hand-prepared cartoon allows. The border is a single restrained guard band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser carpets fussy. Beige grounds are deceptively difficult; this one was built from undyed wool overdyed in a weak madder bath, which is why it warms with light rather than greying.
What you are buying
Period Ziegler carpets from the 1890 to 1920 window appear at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell at hammer prices between 25,000 and 75,000 US dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same drawing tradition, on the same loom geometry, in comparably prepared wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Almost nothing else you put on a floor behaves that way.
The piece in a room
The drawing scale was set for an Edwardian drawing room and translates easily to a primary living area, a formal dining footprint under an eight-seater table, or a generous library. The beige ground reads warm against grey or putty walls, holds steady against walnut and oak floors, and pairs without effort with leather, linen, and brass.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never apply hot water to a wool pile. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. Held to that schedule, the rug outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
