Indigo is the only blue dye in the historical rug vocabulary. Every other blue you see in a vegetable-dyed weaving is indigo at a different concentration, indigo over a yellow underbath, or indigo cooled with iron. The depth of the blue field in a properly dyed Ziegler comes from indigo matured in a copper vat for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered, and from successive dips that build the colour up rather than from a single saturated bath.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months on this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) piece. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, knotted with the Persian asymmetric knot. The blue passages were lowered into the indigo bath three times across the dye programme, with intermediate oxidation between dips to build the colour from inside the fibre rather than at the surface. The finish was a long mineral wash that softens the contrast and lays a slight antiqued bloom across the field.
The composition
A beige ground carries floral and vine work in indigo blue, with the major motifs plotted at the open scale that distinguishes a Ziegler from the denser classical Persian repeats. The blue does not sit flat. It carries the slight tonal drift that successive indigo dips produce, with passages that read deeper at the centre of a motif and lighter at the edges. As the rug ages, the blue will continue to develop. Vegetable-dyed indigo holds its depth longer than any synthetic blue.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler weavings of comparable scale, density, and dye discipline trade in London auction rooms between 20,000 and 45,000 pounds when stocked. A new piece in this lineage is the same loom, the same fibre, the same constructional standard. The asking price reflects a direct line to the workshop floor rather than the layered margins of antique dealing. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the rare property in a household purchase.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds a generous living arrangement, an eight-top dining table with chairs pulled, or the floor of a primary bedroom around a king frame. The beige and indigo palette is most at home with walnut, oak, brass, and warm whites. Cool plaster walls let the indigo settle into a considered ground rather than read as a focal block. Direct morning sun helps the wool open.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum on low suction, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed flat. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the rug every five years. The rug should run eighty to a hundred years with this routine.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
