By the 1880s, the workshops associated with the Ziegler & Co. agency were rewriting the rules of the Persian rug for the European drawing room. The dense floral scrollwork of classical court weaving was opened up, the palette softened toward tan and ivory, and the result was a rug a Western collector could live with rather than treat as wall-mounted treasure. The piece in front of you carries that lineage forward in a six-foot circle of hand-knotted wool.

Three weavers shared a vertical loom for roughly four months to bring this round to completion. Hand-spun wool was knotted onto a cotton warp using the asymmetric Persian knot, the same technique the original Ziegler workshops specified. The pile was sheared low so the angular vines and palmette fragments hold their drawing under foot traffic, and the round perimeter was hand-bound rather than cut from a rectangle.

The composition

A warm tan field with ivory pulled through it as halo and counter-vine. The drawing is loose where Persian classical work would be tight, breathing room around each motif. Tan is a forgiving ground that accepts oak, walnut, brass, leather, and limewashed plaster without argument. Over a decade the tan will lighten by a quarter step and the ivory will warm into bone, the kind of slow chromatic shift only natural fibre and thoughtful dyeing produce.

What you are buying

Antique Ziegler rounds with comparable density and palette move at international auction in the range of $8,000 to $20,000 when they appear at all, and the round format is rarer than the rectangle. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in hand-spun wool on cotton. The MSRP of approximately Rs 2.76 lac reflects equivalent gallery pricing. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

6' (183 cm) round is the working scale for a circular dining table seating four to six, a foyer beneath a chandelier, or the central anchor of a reading corner with a low chair and a tall lamp. The round geometry softens a square room and pulls the eye toward a centre rather than the walls. Mid-tone walls in clay, sage, or unbleached linen hold the tan field at its proper saturation.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn each season so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with clean cotton, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs sixty to eighty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
