A wool-and-silk blend in a brown palette is the modern rug weaver's way of borrowing two languages at once. The wool gives weight and resilience, the silk gives a directional sheen that turns the same field two values lighter or darker depending on the angle of view. The Opera draw belongs to the transitional category, sitting between the dense floral repeats of classical Persia and the open negative space of contemporary studio work.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for close to four months. Hand-spun wool carries the body of the pattern, and a pure silk highlight thread is dropped into the lighter passages so the design reads with two surface heights even before the shears touch it. The brown ground was built up across three indigo and walnut baths to give it the depth that single-dip wool never produces.

The composition

A walnut brown field with caramel and bone tracery, the silk picking up the lighter notes so the pattern shifts from matte to gloss as you cross the room. The drawing is loose, almost calligraphic, with no central medallion to fix the eye. The wool will soften over time and the silk will retain its lustre, which means the contrast between matte field and shining incident grows rather than diminishes with use.

What you are buying

Wool-and-silk carpets at this density, vegetable-dyed and hand-knotted in India, sit in the forty to seventy thousand rupee range at the trade. The retail equivalent in a Western showroom carries a three-to-four times multiplier on the same goods. Buying at the source removes the markup. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the silk content holds value at resale in a way pure wool does not.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale under a low coffee table or at the foot of a queen bed. The brown grounding accepts wood, leather, and warm metals, and reads as a quiet anchor against painted walls in cream, sage, or stone. The silk highlight responds to lamplight after dark, which means the rug carries two different moods between day and evening use.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. The silk highlights will pile-crush under heavy furniture, so set felt pads under chair legs and rotate seasonally. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub a silk-blend pile. Hand-wash by a trained conservator every four to six years. With this care, the rug runs sixty years and improves through that period.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
