The Bidjar weave is famous for being among the densest in the Persian repertoire, beaten down so hard that an old Bidjar can be folded over a doorway like an iron sheet. The structural density translates directly into a working life that can run a hundred years or more. This beige wool rug draws from the long arc of Persian and Indo-Persian rug design, reinterpreted on a vertical loom in India by hands that have inherited the technique through generations.
Production ran 8 months with 3 weavers working at the beam. Around 1,555,200 knots, each one tied by hand. The wool was washed twice before dyeing to strip residue lanolin, then re-treated after weaving so the pile recovers its softness. The weave structure carries a Persian asymmetric knot, which is finer and tighter than the Turkish symmetric and allows the rug to hold detail at a higher density.
The composition
The field opens in beige with a measured rhythm of motif and ground. Border work runs the perimeter without crowding the central composition, and the colour will shift over the next decade as plant dyes mature; the beige will warm, the dark accents will deepen, and the whole rug will read as more itself with every passing year. The pattern carries the slight irregularity of hand-tied work; no two repeats are exactly identical, and that variance is what separates a hand-knotted rug from a printed surface.
What you are buying
An entry point to collecting hand-knotted wool work from the Indian looms. Comparable density and dye discipline at Western dealer counters opens at significantly higher prices once import, retail markup, and provenance documentation are layered in. The rug will outlast the room it is bought for.
The piece in a room
size as listed () sits well beneath a sofa-and-two-chair grouping or a queen bed with the lower two-thirds of the frame on the wool. The piece organises a room without taking it over. The beige reads warm under incandescent light and cools slightly under daylight, so the rug presents two faces across the day.
Conservation
Spin a half turn twice a year so the pile ages evenly under sun and foot traffic. Vacuum weekly without the beater bar. Treat any spill within minutes by blotting straight down. Schedule a conservator's wash every five years to lift accumulated soil from the foundation. The rug becomes more itself with each passing decade.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
