The dhurrie is the Indian counterpart to the kilim of Turkey and the navajo of the southwestern US. A flat-woven rug with the pattern carried in the weft. No pile, no knots, just the geometry built up one row at a time on a horizontal loom. The form has run in continuous workshop production across western India for two centuries, and the vocabulary of stripes, blocks, and stepped diamonds is shared across every culture that has ever woven on a flat loom.

The composition

Multicolour carries the field as an interior ground rather than a printed surface. The pattern moves across the rug at a measured pace, with the densities slightly tighter where the eye expects to settle and looser at the perimeter. The cotton pile holds the colour in a way that printed work never matches, with a small amount of optical movement that reads as life rather than noise. The piece is composed to be looked at, not just walked on.

The piece in a room

The runner at 3' x 5' (3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm)) takes the corridor, the kitchen galley, the side of a bed, or the foot-of-bed bench. Long narrow rugs ask the eye to read the room lengthways and give the space its sense of progression. The multicolour register holds against both pale and saturated walls.

Care

Vacuum gently with the beater off. The flatweave structure means the rug can be flipped twice a year so both faces wear evenly. Blot spills, never rub. For deeper cleaning, hand wash with cool water and mild soap, lay flat to dry. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on the same panel of the field across long stretches of the year.
