The dhurrie is the Indian counterpart to the kilim of Turkey and the navajo of the southwestern US. A flat-woven rug with the pattern carried in the weft. No pile, no knots, just the geometry built up one row at a time on a horizontal loom. The form has run in continuous workshop production across western India for two centuries, and the vocabulary of stripes, blocks, and stepped diamonds is shared across every culture that has ever woven on a flat loom.
Hand-woven in India by 2 weavers over two weeks. Cotton weft on a cotton warp. The flatweave structure is reversible. The beige colour sits in the fibre rather than on the surface, and the rug folds for storage or transport without distress to the body.
The composition
The field works beige as a sustained colour rather than as a flat block. Hand-spun yarn carries small irregularities through the dye, so the surface breathes under raking light and shifts as the day moves across the room. The pattern reads at a distance and reveals fineness on approach. The eye is given somewhere to settle without being told where to land. The borders pull back rather than pushing forward, which is the move that separates a considered design from a busy one.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm)) is the right scale for a small living room, an entry, a study, or a primary bedside placement under the foot of the bed. The beige ground works against both light walls and saturated paint, and pairs with both walnut and oak floors.
Care
Use a low-suction vacuum and skip the beater bar. The rug is reversible, so rotating and flipping it on a quarterly cycle will keep both faces and all four corners wearing evenly. Spot clean with mild soap and cool water. Lay flat to dry if washed. A pad below the rug stops it from creeping under regular traffic.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
