Ziegler is a workshop name rather than a place. In 1883 a Manchester-based firm called Ziegler & Co. opened a buying office in western Iran and asked local weavers to soften the dense floral repeats of classical Persian rug for the Anglo-American drawing rooms of the late Victorian era. The result was the open-field, pale-ground design now associated with the Ziegler label, and the round format takes that vocabulary and reorganises it around a central rosette.
A single weaver worked this 6' (183 cm) round on a circular drawloom in India for close to four months. The pile is hand-spun wool over a cotton foundation. The dyes were vegetable, prepared in copper vats from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and weld, each batch matured for two weeks before the wool went in. Working in the round forces the weaver to turn the loom every few rows so that the pattern radius reads true from any angle, which is slower than rectangular work and accounts for the longer hands time on a piece this size.
The composition
The ground is the warm beige that the Ziegler tradition built its reputation on, achieved here by under-dyeing wool in a weak weld bath before working in pale rose and indigo accents. A central rosette holds the field together, with vine work spiralling out to a single restrained guard border. The colour will shift over the next decade, the rose deepening into oxidised salmon and the indigos settling, which is the slow patina that an honest vegetable-dyed rug develops with use and light.
What you are buying
Antique Persian Zieglers in good condition trade at Christie's and Rippon Boswell in the $8,000 to $20,000 range when they appear. This is a contemporary weaving in the same workshop tradition, on the same kind of loom, with the same fibre and the same vegetable dye process. The round format is harder to weave than the rectangle, which is reflected in the time on loom but not in the price. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
A 6' (183 cm) round sits cleanly under a circular dining table for four to six, or as a hall centrepiece beneath a chandelier. The pale ground reflects light and lifts low-ceilinged rooms. Pair with curved seating, walnut, and warm metals. Strong rectangular furniture fights the geometry; the round wants to live with circular or organic forms around it.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each season so light and footfall age the pile evenly across the radius. Vacuum on suction only. Spills blot with cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this care, a hand-knotted Ziegler in this construction runs eighty years through normal household use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
