Brown is the most architectural ground colour in the Persian rug vocabulary. It does not push toward warmth the way rust does or pull toward coolness the way indigo does. It sits beneath wood, leather, and panelled walls as if it were part of the architecture rather than the furnishing. The original Manchester commissions of the late 1880s asked Persian master weavers for brown grounds when the rug was destined for a country library, because brown grounds held against oak and walnut more honestly than any other field colour.

Across six months of loom work the rug passed under three to four pairs of hands. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. Walnut hull layered with a small amount of madder and oak gall built the brown. Pomegranate rind and lighter walnut filled the secondary tones. Each dye lot matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug saw four days of sun and a long mineral wash to settle the saturation into antique register.

The composition

A warm brown field carrying a continuous palmette and vine repeat in tobacco, faded umber, and chalk. The vine is drawn loose, the rosettes spaced wide, and the border held to a single guard band. The two values sit close enough that the field reads as a single warm wash from across the room. From two metres the vine resolves into individual leaves and tendrils. The brown will lift a quarter shade over the first decade as the lanolin in the wool finds the light.

What you are buying

Period Ziegler Sultanabads in the brown register reach forty to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This rug shares the loom architecture, the Persian knot, the long-staple wool, and the plant-dye discipline of those antiques. At a fraction of the auction comparable, the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working library scale. The brown reads as ground rather than as ornament, which is the property libraries and panelled drawing rooms ask for. Pairs with walnut casework, leather binding, brass detail, raw linen, and a single large work in saturated colour above the sofa.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug crosses a century in regular use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
