Dhurrie weaving runs through Indian textile history as a parallel tradition to the knotted rug, older on Indian soil and quietly more domestic. Royal storerooms in Rajasthan and Gujarat held large dhurries by the hundred, and prison workshops under the British produced them at industrial scale through the nineteenth century.
The work took around three weeks on a horizontal loom under Two. The yarn was prepared in small dye batches and packed weft by weft against a cotton warp. There is no knot and no pile; the design is built into the weft and the rug carries the same image on both faces. The flat structure makes the piece fully reversible across its working life.
The composition
The principal register of the composition is a multi-toned palette. The figures of the design carry the secondary palette and the ground holds the principal colour without competition from the borders. Across the first year of use the surface will deepen in tone as the wool oxidises against ambient light, and the colour relationships in the field will tighten into the saturation the workshop intended. The composition reads as one settled gesture rather than a tile that repeats, which is the older and harder achievement in rug design.
The piece in a room
At 4' x 6' the rug works under a hall console, beside a bed, or as a hearth piece in front of a fireplace. It carries a strong individual presence at this scale and is read close to before it is read across. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation of the field; pale walls push the palette forward as a focal element. The piece does not need a furniture frame to anchor it.
Care
A flatweave responds well to consistent light care. Weekly suction-only vacuuming, no beater bar at any setting. Flip and rotate end for end at six-month intervals. Cool water and mild detergent on a soft cloth handle ordinary spills. Have the piece professionally dry-cleaned every three to four years to refresh the colour and clear the structure.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
