The geometry on this rug grew out of the design language that ran from Bauhaus through Scandinavian modernism into the open fields of 1970s textile art. A pattern that lays a quiet order across a floor without claiming the eye for itself. The point of a strong geometry on a contemporary rug is not to dominate the room. It is to give the architecture and the upholstery above it a coherent ground to sit against.

Hand-tufted in India by 2 tufters and 1 finisher over seven to eight weeks. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a hand-held tufting gun, fixed with natural latex, and backed with a cotton scrim. The beige pile was sheared by hand on the final pass to bring the pattern into relief above the field.

The composition

Beige reads as a sustained ground rather than a printed flat. Subtle tonal shifts run across the field where the yarn was dyed in separate batches and then spun together, so the colour breathes as the eye crosses the rug. The pattern is paced to read from across a room and reward closer inspection at the edge of the rug. The geometry is restrained where lesser designs would clutter the field.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm)) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The rug expects a full sectional or a ten-seater dining arrangement above it, sitting inside the rug as a composed group rather than balancing on its edges. The beige ground holds the saturation that mid-tone walls give back. Direct sunlight helps the dye depth rather than hurting it.

Care

Use a vacuum on suction only. Blot spills, do not rub. Light shedding is normal for the first month and a half as the loose surface fibres work themselves out; the body of the pile is unaffected. A professional dry-clean every two to three years keeps the latex backing supple and the pile colour true. A pad underneath the rug protects both the latex and the floor below.
