The contemporary motif belongs to a long line of decorative grids that move from textile to textile across cultures. The version here was redrawn for the loom and holds the proportion that lets the pattern read at room scale rather than dissolving into a busy surface up close. The cartoon was studied in chalk before the wool was committed to the canvas, and the colour register was tested in small swatches before the first row of tufts was pulled.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over about 4 to 5 weeks. A team of two tufters and a finisher worked wool through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, then sealed the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was done by hand with long shears to relieve the pattern across the surface, cutting the figure proud of the ground by a couple of millimetres so the design reads from sofa distance.

The composition

The neutral surface is built to read as a single considered ground rather than a busy graphic. The contemporary sits on it the way a watermark sits on paper, present without dominating, and the eye can land on it or move past it depending on what the rest of the room is doing.

The economics

The price reflects the working hours of two tufters and a finisher, not a brand premium. Hand-tufted construction lets a designer deliver pile depth and colour saturation that a flatweave cannot reach, at a fraction of what hand-knotted construction would cost across the same surface area.

Care

Weekly vacuum on suction only. Spot-clean with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent worked from the outside in. Schedule a professional dry clean every two to three years to keep the surface even. Initial shedding is normal and clears within a month, after which the pile holds its density.
