Faded coral, soft indigo, and ivory in proportions a nineteenth-century Persian rug would recognise. The medallion holds the field, the corner-pieces echo it, and the border carries the floral guard bands the form requires. The studio worked the pattern in graphite for several months before approving it for production.

The pattern began as a drawing in the studio, was rendered into a digital cartoon, and reaches the loom as a colour code the jacquard mechanism reads one warp at a time. The discipline is closer to the planning of an offset print than to the improvisation of a hand-knotted weaving, and it is the source of the pattern's clean register.

The fibre

The yarn is engineered polypropylene, heat-set so that the colour sits inside the fibre rather than on its surface. The pile stays flat under furniture, recovers from compression on its own, and does not shed. Daily traffic does not show the way it shows on tufted wool, and the cleaning protocol stays inside the range of what a normal household can manage.

The composition

The medallion sits inside a field of vine and palmette work that reads, at distance, as a single dense ground and, at close range, as a botanical garden. The border carries three guard bands, with the middle band doing the structural work. The dominant tones read as red.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room with a sectional or two facing sofas above it. The composition is built to be read from the standing height of someone walking into the room. Pairs with both saturated wall colour and lime-washed neutral plaster. The intended use is the room that the wool tier cannot reasonably enter. A holiday home that goes unattended for months. A household with pets and children. A lobby or a corridor with the foot traffic of an ordinary working week. The construction is built for that life cycle and the pattern carries the brief.

Care

Weekly vacuuming keeps the surface fresh. For spills, blot with a clean dry cloth and follow with mild detergent if needed. The synthetic pile dries quickly and resists discolouration. The rug requires no specialist cleaning under normal use.
