The drawing for this rug began in studios working in conversation with mid-century geometry and traditional motif libraries. The result is a floral field in rust that holds at any viewing distance. Standing in the doorway you read the composition as a single mass; close to the rug you read the individual strokes of the floral drawing.

The drawing was developed over months in a design studio before going into production. Each colour was specified in detail and tested for behaviour under both warm and cool light. The resulting floral composition in the rust family is built to hold its read across the variable lighting conditions of an actual room.

The composition

The rust field carries the work. Secondary tones sit close in value rather than competing, so the eye reads the pattern as one composition rather than as a layered surface. The floral structure shows differently in morning and evening light, the surface catching highlight at low angles and flattening to a single colour plane at midday. The drawing was tuned to perform across that range of conditions.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene. The colour is locked in by temperature rather than dyed at the surface, so saturation does not fade under direct sunlight the way pigment printing fades. The fibre resists staining at the molecular level: spilled wine, juice, oil, or coffee lift with a damp cloth before they set. The pile stays flat under furniture and does not shed.

The piece in a room

At 5'3" x 7'7" (160 × 231 cm) the rug sits in a primary bedroom under a queen bed with twelve to eighteen inches showing on either side, in a medium living room under the front legs of a sofa, or in a study laid full under desk and chair. The rust register pairs with walnut, oak, and warm metals. The floral drawing reads cleanly from any of those orientations because the composition was scaled to live at this format rather than scaled down from a larger original.

Care

Vacuum weekly. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cloth. Machine wash on a cold 30°C cycle if a spill resists spot cleaning; the size folds to fit a domestic drum. Dries flat in two hours. No professional cleaning required. The fibre is colourfast under direct sunlight, so the rug can sit in a sunny living room without fading the way wool would.
