What the trade calls a Serapi is a Heriz of the highest grade, woven before the 1920s with the most disciplined drawing and the deepest dye. The medallion expanded across the entire field. Corner pieces resolved into stylised herati clusters. New weaving in the Serapi tradition keeps this proportion.

The loom carried this piece for several months. Hand-tied knots at approximately 145 per square inch on a cotton foundation. Hand-spun wool dyed in small lots from madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each batch matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

The field opens around a stepped diamond. The warm madder grounds the composition; the ivory works as relief above it. Madder reds carry warmth across the field while indigo guard bands hold the edges. The pile will compact and lustre under traffic, which deepens the colour rather than wearing it.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted vegetable-dyed wool carpets sell through Western dealers at multiples of the Indian retail price for the simple reason that the labour is paid for once at source and marked up at every step thereafter. Buying from the workshop end of the chain is the structural arbitrage. The rug holds its value because the work cannot be reproduced quickly at any price.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as the central composition of a room arranged around it. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation. The warm madder carries warmth into the architecture without competing with upholstery or art.

Conservation

Turn the rug end for end every six months so the pile compacts evenly under traffic. Vacuum with suction only, never a beater bar. Address spills immediately with a dry cotton cloth. A specialist hand-wash every five to seven years restores lustre. The piece is built to outlast the room it is placed in.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.

Have a question about this rug?

We are happy to answer questions about size, material, weave technique, sample availability, custom orders, lead times, or anything else. Average reply time is under an hour during UK business hours (Mon–Fri, 9am–6pm GMT).
